Although poisonous, older herbalists recommended application of various parts of the plant for headaches, fevers and rheumatic gout.
Culpepper believed this plant cured leprosy, improved catarrah conditions, cleansed malignant and corroding ulcers, and helped inflammation of the eyes.
Their centers have been likened to a tent, in which the fairies nestled for protection.
