Hulman & Company Memorabilia

Hulman & Company is a private, family owned, company founded in 1850 by Francis Hulman as a wholesale grocery, tobacco, and liquor store in Terre Haute, Indiana. Throughout the early half of the 20th century, Hulman & Co. became nationally known for its Clabber Girl baking powder which it began producing in 1899. In 1945, the company purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in what many thought was an unusual investment for a company with a rich history in the food and beverage industry. Hulman & Co. closed its Evansville branch in 1965 and its Mattoon, Illinois branch in 1969. A year earlier, in 1968, it had also closed its spice and coffee mill, an enterprise that Herman Hulman had first got up and going in 1869. In 1995 Hulman & Co. closed its wholesale grocery division mainly due to the losing battle with the big supermarket chains who purchased directly from the manufacturers. Hulman and Co. is still in business, very diversified in its holdings, is expanding its product line and is a business friend of Terre Haute.
