Garuda with Vishnu Mounted on His Back



Size: 20 1/2" tall X 5 1/2 square.

Type of Material: Carved wood. As photos show, there is cracks from shrinkage to the back of the statue. Statue was carved when the wood was still full of moisture, it dried and cracked. Cracks are stable, old and not seen from the front of the statue. Do not know date when carved, where carved or type of wood.

    Garuda
is a lesser Hindu divinity, usually the mount of Vishnu. Vishnu was the only god powerful enough to subdue Garuda. Garuda is depicted as having a golden body, white face, red wings, and an eagle's beak, but with a strong man's body. He wears a crown on his head. He is ancient and has size enough to block out the sun.
